When and Why to Update Your Windshield Wiper Blades Steve Landers Collision

No matter what kind of car you drive or how big of an enthusiast you are, chances are you won’t be standing around with friends talking about the latest model of windshield wiper blades or jumping for joy when you purchase a new set. We get it. Wipers aren’t exactly the most fun or flashy part of your car, but they are important.

Even if you’re good about getting regular maintenance for your vehicle, windshield wipers can be easily forgotten or overlooked. We know we have to get our oil changed, rotate the tires, check our levels and all the rest of the standard procedures. But wipers are tricky. You generally only use them when it rains, so they’re not always on your mind otherwise. But if you’ve ever been caught in a torrential downpour with out-of-date wipers, you might understand just how important it is to change them on time.

When the weather takes a turn for the worse, limited visibility is a leading cause of accidents. That’s what we’d like to help you avoid! If you keep these tips in mind, they could actually save your life.

First of all, if you can’t think of the last time you changed your windshield wipers, it’s probably time. You don’t want to take any risks with your safety, so it’s always better to err on the side of caution.

If you’re not sure if it’s time yet, there are a few ways you can tell that your blades are getting too worn.  When you turn them on, they should not leave any kind of residue or mark on your windshield. That means should be no smudging, smearing or scraping action happening at all.

If your blades make a sound as they wipe, that’s a bad sign too. If you’re hearing a loud noise as your wipers drag across your windshield, they’re definitely nearing the end of their lives—even if the visibility still seems okay.

On average, you should change your wiper blades twice per year. One easy way to make sure you get your wipers taken care of is to schedule dates at the beginning of summer and again in the winter. That way you won’t have to try and remember when you got them changed last.
